Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828), Symphony No. 8 ("Unfinished") 1822, MMT. 1 Considered to be one of the earliest examples of music written in the Romantic style. The work was never completed by Schubert, for reasons which can only be speculated, and contains only 2 movements, with an additional scherzo movement only initially written without being fully orchestrated. |

Schubert, Erlkonig (Elfking) 1815. A great example of the German Romantic song (Lied) in through-composed form, based on a poem by Johann Goethe; note the descriptive piano accompaniment and emotional voice melody.
