MUSIC APPRECIATION 1030

This course will explore music and related literature as practiced in the Western hemisphere from the Middle Ages to the current trends of today. Presentations and material will focus primarily on Classical music, although all significant styles and idioms (such as Jazz and Rock) will also be discussed. Topics will include the basic elements of music, general stylistic ideals of recognized historical periods, and general biographical information regarding noted composers as well as significant musical compositions from each historical period. Most importantly, students will develop specific listening skills to enhance their enjoyment of all types of music. Some music background is helpful but NOT essential for this course.

MUSIC FUNDAMENTALS 1050

This course is intended for the student seeking an introductory understanding of the basic elements of music and is an ideal prerequisite for those who wish to pursue more advanced formal study. Topics will include the traditional piano keyboard layout, notation in treble and bass clef, elementary rhythmic notation, major/minor scales and key signatures, interval designation, basic harmonic/chord construction, and simple sight-singing skills. Some music background is helpful but not required.
